Chapter 18

The wooden planks of the old ship creaked in the ocean breeze as the Jolly Roger sloshed in the water. Viv’s light footsteps walked along the crow’s nest, admiring the billowing cream-colored sails, one painted with a large, pitch-black skull and crossbones. Ropes crisscrossed around them, and a small, black pirate flag whipped over their heads in the air. Below her, voices could be heard on the deck, small shouts, and the occasional pop of a gunshot.

“This looks exactly how I always imagined.” Viv smiled over at Peter, his arm wrapped around her waist as they both stared at the bustle below.

“That’s the magic of Neverland.” he winked.

“So, there’s no more Captain Hook?” Viv asked.

Peter shook his head. “No, but sometimes I can still hear him shouting ‘Smee!’ from the crocodile’s belly.”

She shook her head, giggling as she imagined the cartoon version of Captain Hook flopping around inside the giant crocodile. “Now I know you’re making that up.”

He shrugged, his impish smile making the butterflies in Viv’s belly flutter like they were stuck in a tornado. “So what? That’s part of the fun. This is a place of make-believe and fairy tales. You can be whoever you want and do whatever you want.”

“And do whoever you want,” she added.

Peter laughed, the warm sound echoing around them.

Some pirates shouted below them, Viv glanced down and saw them pointing up at them. One of the pirates, a short man with an eye patch and half a beard was hobbling toward them, wheeling over a large cannon pointed up at them.

“Peter,” Viv warned, nodding down at them.

Peter glanced at them with a wicked smile. “You’ll never catch me,” Peter shouted. He wrapped his arms around Viv and stuck his tongue out at the pirates. He flew straight up as a loud boom blasted through the air. The cannonball ripped through the crow’s nest, large chunks of wood raining down on the pirates. With a shout, they scattered like ants avoiding a rain drop.

Peter laughed, his warm smile so infectious that Viv felt her own cheeks tugging upward, even though a group of pirates had just tried to kill them. “You’re a mad man, Peter Pan,” she shouted. Her voice was carried away on the wind as he flew them back over the island, higher above the clouds.

Peter laughed harder, the sound reverberating throughout his body, shaking her to her core as he set her down on a cloud. “So, where should we go next, darling?” Before she could speak, his hands pressed against her cheeks, keeping her head still. His lips pressed against hers in a fierce kiss, brimming with happiness.

When he broke away, Viv felt her cheeks ache from smiling. “Peter, I love it here, but we have to go back,” she said.

“Don’t you want to stay here with me?” he asked, his lips twisting in a smirk.

Viv blushed. “Of course I want to stay with you, but I have to go back.”

“Why?” he asked.

A heaviness began to sink onto her shoulders.
